It is no secret in Hollywood that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is struggling. Phases Four and Five projects have been met with mixed results from fans across the board. Even billion-dollar hits such as Spider-Man: No Way Home along with Deadpool and Wolverine leaned heavily on nostalgia to lure back jaded audiences. Now, Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie reveals how Avengers: Doomsday will return to the MCU’s glory days.
Speaking to IGN to promote season 2 of Peacock’s Twisted Metal, Mackie shared his excitement for the epic fifth Avengers installment before he starts filming.
“Yeah, man, we’re kicking on down the road, so everybody’s getting excited and we’re getting the band back together. We’re supposed to go out this week and we’ll be out there doing it. Everybody’s excited. I feel with the script and having the Russo brothers back, it’s going to be great. I’m really excited for what this project is going to be. It’s going to give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had.”
When I hear the words “that old Marvel feeling”, I get the sense that Avengers: Doomsday will lean even harder on nostalgia than ever before. Many of the post-Avengers: Endgame films and Disney+ shows made progressive attempts to evolve the MCU within the Multiverse Saga concept. Unfortunately, such ambitious efforts as Eternals, The Marvels, Brave New World, and Secret Invasion failed to connect with audiences the way projects in the Infinity Saga had done.

Based on the recent cast announcements using chairs, Marvel Studios hopes to win the audience back by bringing in legacy X-Men actors from the Fox era alongside Robert Downey, Jr. as Doctor Doom. But that is simply icing on a half-baked cake with reports of the script continuing to be worked on while actors such as Thunderbolts’ Florence Pugh claim they have not read it. With possibly the largest A-list cast in the MCU’s history, RDJ’s heavy salary, and the Russos’ shaky track record with recent films, Marvel has everything on the line for Doomsday to succeed, or else heads could roll.
