Tom Hardy Clarifies Venom and Spider-Man Crossover Comments: “It Didn’t Get Killed by Anything”
Tom Hardy previously opened up about how close Sony Pictures came to making a Venom/Spider-Man crossover, saying,“We got close.” He added, “We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”As for why is didn’t happen, Hardy was nudged on whether studio politics got in the way. Hardy didn’t spell it out, but he didn’t deny it either, saying: “For all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”Now the actor is setting the record straight, saying he was misquoted. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hardy pushed back on the idea that some behind the scenes drama between Marvel Studios and Sony killed the crossover dream. “I didn't say that at all,” he said, clearing the air on what many assumed was insider knowledge about the scrapped team-up between his Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.He explained: “That’s kind of moved on from a very simple quote that I said specifically about my children watching Venom. It’s hard to explain to a young child why their favorite superheroes can’t be in a film together and that’s such a shame. And we almost got it, but it didn’t happen, which is the truth. It didn’t happen.”The actor said they "almost got together" because of his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credit scene, but the idea was quickly scrapped. He said: “The [Venom] trilogy is now over and it didn’t happen. So, it didn’t get killed by anything, it just didn’t happen. I’ve been misquoted there. People get excited about anything Venom or anything to do with superheroes and stuff and it’s sort of taken on another life. I just want to be clear that I didn’t say that.”Hardy did throw a small bone to fans still holding out hope, admitting the conversations never really stopped, saying:“There are always talks. But that doesn’t mean that things manifested. There’s a future where these things will continue to be talked about until something is realized and I’m sure it will be at some point, but it just didn’t happen with me.”Now that Hardy has officially bid farewell to the symbiote, he’s shifting gears. Next up he’s got MobLand, a new series currently streaming on Paramount+ where he stars alongside Pierce Brosnan.
