PS2 rerelease

Thanks to Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, and other mascot platformers from the Nintendo 64 and PS1 era, the PS2 featured a plethora of third-party 3D platformers. Many have returned to modern platforms, with the latest coming from THQ Nordic.

PS2 platformer Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy might be coming to PS4 and PS5 soon

Originally developed by Eurocom and published by THQ (now THQ Nordic), it seems the 2003 PS2 platformer Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is coming to PS4 and PS5 soon.

As reported by Gematsu, PS4 trophies for the game have surfaced, which means it’s only a matter of time before the demigod returns to a PlayStation platform. More importantly, it has a Platinum!

An HD port of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy was released back in 2019 for PC and Nintendo Switch. As it has yet to be formally announced, it is not yet known if this new PS4 and PS5 version is that 2019 port or if it’s an emulated version of the original PS2 game.

“Sphinx and The Cursed Mummy is an original 3rd person action-adventure inspired by the mythology of ancient Egypt,” reads the description for Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. “Travelling the world via magical portals to foil the evil plans of Set. Sphinx’s Journey will require all his wits, agility, and special powers. He will also rely on his reluctant hero friend, The Mummy, to help when being inconspicuous is the only solution. By finding the stolen magical crowns of Egypt, Sphinx can stop Set and save the world.”

Back when Sphinx and the Cursed Mumm launched for PS2 in 2003, it was received decently. According to review aggregate site Metacritic, it received an average score of 78 across 28 critic reviews.

This is far from the first time THQ Nordic has rereleased one of its 3D platformers. Just last year, the company released Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, a remaster of the cult classic Disney platformer starring the titular Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
