With “A Minecraft Movie” dominating cinemas the past two weekends, it comes as little surprise that the success and interest in the film and overall franchise is having a knock-on effect on the video game itself.
The Game Business reports that by the end of the film’s first weekend, players were up 17% week-on-week according to data from Ampere Analysis.
On the Sunday before the film’s release, after developer Mojang ran a bunch of activity related to the film including free DLC, the numbers were up 14% week-on-week.
That’s two consecutive weeks of double-digit growth of an already massive 170 million monthly active user base.
Meanwhile Nielsen/GfK indicates the Nintendo Switch version of the game saw a rise in sales of 25% in the week before the movie came out, and then again by 8% after the movie released.
This is not surprising as games often have seen either sales or user activity spikes in the wake of film and TV season releases, be they successful adaptations or not.
Microsoft acquired Mojang in 2014 with the game generating over $2.8 billion in sales revenue to date, peaking with $500 million in 2018.
