The sequel to The Accountant is set to bring audiences back into the thrilling world of Christian Wolff, played by Ben Affleck. In a recent press conference moderated by Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley, Affleck, along with co-stars Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniela Pineda, and director Gavin O’Connor, shared insights into the making of The Accountant 2 and what fans can expect from the follow-up film.
Affleck Returns to a Fan-Favorite Role
Ben Affleck, who rarely revisits roles in sequels, explained why this film was an exception. The original The Accountant gained a strong following, particularly as streaming services expanded its reach. “This is a movie where after the first one, and it was successful, I was really proud of it, but it had a longer life in terms of real-life feedback from people,” Affleck shared. The demand from fans, combined with a well-crafted script by Bill Dubuque and Gavin O’Connor’s meticulous storytelling, made the decision to return an easy one.
Director Gavin O’Connor on Expanding the Story
Gavin O’Connor, who also helmed the first installment, spoke about his approach to the sequel. He emphasized that while the film retains the DNA of the original, it also takes unexpected turns. “It was a matter of how do we recreate the character in a way that puts him on a different journey,” O’Connor explained. A key plot point involved integrating Bernthal’s character, Brax, more prominently and making the story deeply personal for both Wolff and his brother. O’Connor’s main goal was to make a movie that audiences would walk out of saying, “That was a great time at the movies.”
A Surprising Comedic Element
One of the most surprising aspects of The Accountant 2 is its humor. The dynamic between Affleck and Bernthal naturally led to moments of comedic gold. Bernthal admitted that he wasn’t initially aware of how much humor would play into his role. “I don’t know that I was ever really told that,” he said, laughing. However, O’Connor confirmed that the humor was organic, growing from the characters’ interactions rather than being a forced element. Affleck added, “Jon took pleasure in torturing me, which is funny if it’s not you.”
Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s Evolved Role
Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who reprises her role as Treasury officer Marybeth Medina, described her character’s transformation. “In the first movie, I was kind of out of my depth, and Marybeth was too. Now, she’s in an elevated position within the Treasury Department, more confident and in control.” Interestingly, Affleck pointed out that Addai-Robinson’s character is actually the protagonist of the sequel. “She is the entry point for the audience, and we get to play character parts,” he noted, highlighting how the film’s narrative centers around her journey.

A Promising Theatrical Experience
With The Accountant 2 receiving the Audience Award at South by Southwest, expectations are high. O’Connor and the cast promise an experience that blends high-octane action with unexpectedly heartfelt and humorous moments. Whether it’s Affleck’s masterful portrayal of Christian Wolff, Bernthal’s hilarious-yet-intense dynamic with his on-screen brother, or Addai-Robinson’s compelling evolution, the sequel is poised to be a thrilling ride.
Audiences can look forward to The Accountant 2 delivering the action-packed, character-driven, and unexpectedly comedic experience that makes for a memorable trip to the theater.
