HBO Officially Reveals Main Adult Cast For Harry Potter Season 1

After many trade reports HBO has finally officially revealed the main adult cast for Harry Potter Season 1. I think all but two of these names were known, but at least it’s all now official. As per THR‘s coverage,

‘After months of media rumors and reports of various castings — all previously unconfirmed by HBO — the company broke its silence on the matter to announce six actors for the core adult roles of its adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels.’

‘As expected, Emmy winner John Lithgow (Conclave) will take on the critical role of Hogwarts’ wise and warm Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.’

‘Oscar nominee Janet McTeer (Ozark) will take on the role of stern Transfiguration Professor Minerva McGonagall.’

‘And as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Paapa Essiedu (Black Mirror) will take on the role of the sneering Potions Professor Severus Snape.’

‘Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) will play the lumbering Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. All four will serve as series regulars in the show.’

‘In addition, stage actor Luke Thallon will play Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor Quirinus Quirrel and Paul Whitehouse (Harry & Paul) has been cast as the curmudgeonly caretaker Argus Filch.’

I’m not worrying about spoilers for a book series as well read as Potter, plus we have the movies for those who don’t read books. Ergo, we know Luke Thallon will only appear as Quirrel in Season 1 of the show. We also know there’s another role not yet been announced and that’s who Quirrel is hiding under his turban, Voldemort. The movies didn’t bother casting Voldemort until the fourth film, will the show do the same and just have a voice actor for Voldemort until he actually returns in Book 4/Season 4?

The rest as I’m sure you know will feature in all seven season of the series. Though Lithgow will only have a small role to play in Season 7.

There’s still no word on when filming begins for Harry Potter. However, it must be this year or early next year if the cast are all announced. Still no word on the main stars of the series, the kids, but HBO said this,

“We haven’t made any final choices, but we’re workshopping with a shortlist in January. And there are some crackers,” Mark Mylod (director/exec producer) has said, adding that they want to focus on “the cream of British acting talent, this incredible tradition of brilliant theater actors, and, of course, we’re following the books with the canonical casting.”
