Warner Bros. Pictures and Plan B’s sci-fi comedy “Mickey 17” is tracking for a $19-20 million opening this weekend in the wake of a $7.7 million opening day haul on Friday (including $2.5 million in previews).
The Bong Joon Ho-directed and Robert Pattinson-led film has pulled in quite positive reviews and a mediocre ‘B’ CinemaScore in studio exit polls – not unexpected for the material which is tonally wild and fairly challenging.
With a $118M production cost before marketing, the film is going to need to go well overseas if it hopes to make enough to potentially get into profit. The opening is in line with other original sci-fi of recent years like “The Creator” at $14 million, “Ad Astra” at $19 million and “Jupiter Ascending” at $18 million.
The film is one of several auteur gambles thi year alongside Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s next, both of which need to be marketed right to land safely.
The film is faring far better than the other newcomers this weekend with the Angel Studios release “Rule Breakers” in ninth with $1.3 million, while the Milla Jovovich-led action film “In the Lost Lands” barely made it into tenth place with $940,000.
Last week’s newcomer “Last Breath” looks set to fall to third place with a decent 49% drop to $4 million in its sophomore run. “Captain America: Brave New World” will hold second place in its fourth weekend with $8.5 million – a 43% drop and a total of $176.5 million so far.
“The Monkey” with $3.9 million and “Paddington in Peru” with $3.85 million will round out the top five. Oscar winner “Anora” saw an Oscar win bump – the film jumping 554% to $1.75 million for the weekend.
