“Mandalorian” Movie Cheapest Since ‘Sith’?

Jon Favreau’s upcoming “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie looks set to be the most cost-effective “Star Wars” film since George Lucas sold off the franchise.

Collider has found numbers within the California Film Commission website which indicates the film has an overall production budget of $166.4 million.

As the movie was shot in California, it received tax credit from the state and in this case managed to get back around $21.75 million.

Its cost is just over half that of the most expensive “Star Wars” film to date – “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” which cost around $317 million to produce.

Both “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” came in at $275 million each, while “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” came in at just $245 million. The cheapest of the Disney era so far, “Rogue One,” cost $200 million to produce.

The new film does cost more than the prequels which came in at around $115 million each, but adjusting for inflation it’s cheaper as those films rise up to budgets of around $220 million each.

The first “Star Wars” theatrical release since 2019, Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin alongside the young Grogu. The film also stars Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Jonny Coyne.

“The Mandalorian & Grogu” will open in cinemas on May 22nd 2026.
