Live-Action “Tangled” Remake Stalls Indefinitely

Disney’s live-action reimagining of the 2010 animated film “Tangled” has hit pause according to sources for THR.

The project had been in active development and “The Greatest Showman” and “Better Man” filmmaker Michael Gracey was on board to direct from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Thor: Love and Thunder”).

But this month saw the release of Disney’s live-action “Snow White,” a project plagued by controversial headlines from the start and suffering from poor reviews and poorer box-office.

That has resulted in what’s expected to be an estimated loss of $115 million after all global home entertainment, TV and Disney+ ancillaries are factored in according to Deadline earlier this week.

The studio appears to have taken notice and it remains uncertain whether “Tangled” will move forward later or be creatively rebooted.

Part of the issue is that some key execs that were behind and pushed for Disney’s live-action features strategy have now exited the studio, so the push for more of those seems to be waning.

A real test for Disney’s future live-action plans will come with the “Lilo & Stitch” remake opening next month and then the live-action “Moana” next summer.
