A new feature piece on Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has gone online over at EW, showcasing new photos from the film along with sharing some new details including slight changes to these versions of familiar characters.
One change will be Johnny Storm who won’t be like the uncaring, skirt-chasing womaniser that Chris Evans played in the 2005 film. Actor Joseph Quinn, who takes on the role, says:
“He’s a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he’s funny… this version of Johnny is less callous with other people’s feelings, and hopefully there’s a self-awareness about what’s driving that attention-seeking behavior.”
Director Matt Shakman adds that another element this version of Johnny has that is often forgotten is that he’s “really smart” and “on that spaceship for a reason… he’s been one of the most heroic of them, even if he’s undercutting his heroism at every turn through humor.”
Whereas Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards has developed many of the scientific advancements of this alternate 1960s utopia, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm has made major advancements in the political realm – her efforts have been key to global demilitarization and peace.
Kirby was well aware of the different incarnations of Sue over the years and plays them up – while her character’s pregnancy and motherhood aspects will be the main focus, she isn’t forgetting the part of her life where she embraces her darker side and becomes ‘Malice’ so Kirby aimed to make sure “there were tones of Malice in there with her” so the character isn’t just another “goody, sweet mother”.
The film’s take on Galactus, played by actor Ralph Ineson, has the character wearing the actual purple-and-blue armor of the comics. Shakman says having someone actually play the role was key to it:
“I didn’t want to just use motion-capture for Galactus. I wanted to actually have someone there embodying the part. So we’ve built an entire costume for him, and we’ve done a lot of photography testing to figure out, How do you make sure that the scale is correct? How do you film Mount Rushmore?”
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is slated to open in cinemas in July.
