For a few months now, the future of “Doctor Who” has been looking decidedly uncertain.
Reports have splashed across the British papers about the show’s ratings, talk of current star Ncuti Gatwa quitting, questions around showrunner Russell T Davies’ future with the series, even talk of the show ‘going away’ for a few years.
Speaking with BBC Newsround to promote the just-launched second season of Gatwa’s run, the actor cautiously responded “I don’t know anything” about another season.
Davies was much more forthcoming. The writer/producer has always spoken positively about the show’s future and while that still remains, even he for the first time seems to acknowledge that this season may be the last for quite a few years:
“I kind of know that the Doctor’s reached the status of like Robin Hood. Sometimes there might be a pause, and during that pause, the viewers of Newsround now will grow up a few years and start writing stories and they’ll bring it back. So I have absolute faith that that will survive because I am living proof of it and that’s what happens to good ideas. No good idea ever dies.”
The BBC has still made no official announcement about the future of the series at this point, likely waiting to see how the current season is received both critically and audience figure wise. It won’t be the end of the franchise entirely as the UNIT-themed spin-off “The War Between the Land and the Sea” is still yet to air.
The current “Doctor Who” season, the fifteenth since the 2005 revival, premiered its first episode on Saturday and will run through the remaining seven until May 31st.
