Cruise Talks Arduous “Final Reckoning” Stunt

Following on from its Super Bowl Big Game spot yesterday, actor Tom Cruise has spoken some more about the action in the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie discussed a major sequence in which his Ethan Hunt character is diving into the wreckage of the Sevastopol submarine sunk in the opening sequence of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”.

The sequence was filmed in an 8.5 million liter water tank and required the actor to wear a specially-designed mask and suit that could only be worn for 10 minutes at a time before he would start to suffer hypoxia (lack of oxygen in his tissues)

Cruise says he would breathe in his own carbon dioxide filming the scene:

“It builds up in the body and affects the muscles. You have to overcome all of that while you’re doing it, and be present.”

McQuarrie says they had to convey how difficult it was for Ethan to do what he’s doing in the film, but also to try and keep Cruise safe:

“He’s in a rotating structure filled with debris, and you had to find a way to make that environment look as chaotic and unhinged as humanly possible, but in a way that you could repeat, and that Tom could navigate, and survive.”

The film’s cast also includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” opens in cinemas on May 23rd.
