Former Democratic strategist James Carville has a blunt message for young progressives who prioritize political symmetry when looking for romantic partners: “Get over your preening and your moral superiority.”
In an interview with Fox News Digital published Saturday, Carville responded to “Love Is Blind” contestant Sara Carton leaving her potential groom Ben Mezzenga at the altar over their political differences. One example the apparent liberal gave is that he did not engage with social causes like Black Lives Matter.
Carville, who’s been married to GOP consultant Mary Matalin for more than three decades, said that prioritizing politics over love is a limiting endeavor.
“And the more pragmatic in how you approach life, you’ll end up being a lot happier, and you’ll actually win an election,” he continued. “And therefore, you can actually do things and you could do some of the things that you want, because if you lose, it doesn’t do any good. It’s about nothing. That’s what I would tell them.”

Carville, who married Matalin in 1993, was asked about the topic as the “Love Is Blind” finale plot line was trending this week. Carville also said politics “doesn’t come up that much” between he and his wife because they have “all kinds of other things” to talk about.
He also joked he wasn’t “good looking enough” to find love with just Democrats. “I had to broaden the base, OK? I just couldn’t concentrate on Democratic women. I mean, I needed love,” Carville added.
“I think it was Woody Allen that said the good thing about being bisexual, it doubles your chances of getting a date. Well, I couldn’t go — I wasn’t that! I couldn’t get that far so I decided, ‘Well, I’ll start dating Republicans. That’ll double my chances to get a date.’ Some of it is just, you know, self-preservation,” he said.
Carville and Matalin met in 1992 when she worked for then-President George H.W. Bush and he worked for Bush’s opponent, Bill Clinton. As reported by BJT Online, in 2016 Matalin swapped her voter registration from Republican to Libertarian. Though the two may not discuss politics at home, they have appeared together on numerous talk shows and co-authored the 2014 book “Love & War” on the topic.
