One of the most exciting discoveries from the
2025 Cannes Film Festival (so far) is a film titled
Sirat, made by Spanish-French filmmaker
Óliver Laxe. I've been
posting trailers for it already leading up to the start of the festival, but it really is all about the experience watching this and discovering where it's taking us on its journey through the desert. Cinema reigns!! What an unforgettable experience watching this together with the packed-house of cinephiles at the press screening on Thursday night. Everyone came out of the screening raving about it, everyone has something to say about it - these are the kind of Cannes moments I live for.
Sirat is awesome. This is what cinematic storytelling is all about. It's one giant metaphor, of course, but it also can be viewed as a literal trip through this desert hell. And the shock and awe of discovering what happens as you're watching it for the first time is essential to the experience of understanding the film. And, by extension, understanding life – the shock and awe of never knowing what's about to happen next in life. //
