Alice Coltrane being celebrated at Carnegie Hall with Flying Lotus, Ravi Coltrane, Brandee Younger & more

The late, legendary, spiritual jazz pioneer Alice Coltrane‘s music will be celebrated at one very special night at NYC’s Carnegie Hall on May 16. Dubbed COSMIC MUSIC: The Celestial Songs of Alice Coltrane, the evening was curated by her son Ravi Coltrane and other family members, and it features performances by Ravi, her daughter Michelle Coltrane, and her grandnephew Flying Lotus, marking the first time that the three of them will have ever appeared on stage together.

Brandee Younger, a contemporary jazz harpist who’s helped carry the torch for Alice’s music throughout her own career, will perform on Alice’s recently restored harp, the very harp that John Coltrane gifted to Alice in 1967 that Alice later used to record Journey In Satchidananda and A Monastic Trio. The concert will also feature the singers of the Sai Anantam Devotional Ensemble, pianist David Virelles, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and bassist Robert Hurst, and a chamber orchestra.

The title of the concert is an homage to Alice’s 1968 “Cosmic Music” performance at Carnegie Hall, which was one of seven times she performed there. Her February 21, 1971 Carnegie Hall concert was just released as a live album last year.

COSMIC MUSIC: The Celestial Songs of Alice Coltrane goes down in the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at 8 PM on Friday, May 16. Tickets are on sale now.
