Last night, at 2:17am, every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark, and never came back. Watch the official trailer for Barbarian director Zach Cregger’s Weapons, in theaters on August 8, 2025.
Here’s the brand new official synopsis from New Line Cinema: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Much like Barbarian, Cregger’s new movie is cloaked in a web of darkness, with even this trailer refusing to spoil pretty much anything about the movie. All we know is the basic gist of the storyline, with the trailer teasing that it’s only the beginning of this nightmarish mystery.
“That mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie,” Cregger tells Entertainment Weekly. “The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It doesn’t abandon that question, believe me, but that’s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we’ve moved on to way crazier shit than that.”
Cregger continues, “I wanted a horror epic, and so I tried to do that. It is more ambitious [than Barbarian] in almost every way. I don’t just mean in terms of the budget, but I just mean creatively. The story is weirder and it’s twistier and it’s bigger. The set pieces are definitely bigger. It’s just a bigger, weirder movie than Barbarian is.”
On that note, Cregger’s two horror movies may exist within the very same universe…

The cast for Cregger’s new film includes Josh Brolin (Dune 2), Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives).
Cregger directs from his own screenplay, and also produces alongside Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, with Michelle Morrissey and Josh Brolin executive producing. The filmmaker’s creative team behind the camera includes director of photography Larkin Seiple, production designer Tom Hammock, editor Joe Murphy and costume designer Trish Sommerville. The music is by Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay and Zach Cregger.
New Line Cinema Presents a Subconscious/Vertigo Entertainment/Boulderlight Pictures Production, a Zach Cregger Film, Weapons. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and released in theaters and IMAX nationwide on August 8, 2025, and internationally beginning in August 2025.
