WBD Lost $264 Million On “Joker,” “Furiosa”

Recently, trade publication Deadline has been doing a series looking at the most profitable films of last year at the box-office. As that series is near its end, they briefly turned their attention towards the five biggest box office flops of 2024.

The result is a list of the films that lost the most money for their studios, and how much money each of them lost. The numbers don’t just include production budgets and box-office but also costs like P&A spend, residuals/distribution, interest, etc. and revenue to the studio from theatrical (minus exhibitor cuts), home entertainment, television and streaming.

Coming in at number one unsurprisingly was “Joker: Folie a Deux” with a net loss of $144 million for the studio – the film making $227 million and costing a total of $371 million to make, market and release.

The surprise second place though was George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with a net loss of $120 million. The film was well received, but only made $211 million in total for the studio in cinemas and on home release after costing a total of $331 million to make, market and release. Together the two films lost $264 million for Warner Bros. Discovery.

Also not faring well was Lionsgate with “Borderlands” losing $80 million and “Megalopolis” losing $75.5 million for third and fourth place respectively. Both titles made the easy majority of their money on foreign sales which accounted for 67% & 71% of their revenue respectively. Lionsgate merely distributed the Coppola film so their only expense there was a $3-5 million distribution fee.

Rounding out the top five was “Kraven the Hunter” which lost $71 million, though Sony co-financed the film – which limits their loss to less than half that.
