Rockstar Games has officially delayed the launch of “Grand Theft Auto VI” (GTA 6) to May 26th 2026.
The project was originally slated to release in the third or fourth quarter of this year, but a specific launch date had not been announced. The possibility of a delay into 2026 was said to be on the cards.
The shift of the date to next year is expected to have a big impact on the Fall game release schedule. Many developers and publishers were trying to steer clear of the gaming juggernaut, holding off on announcing plans for their Fall releases until it was determined if GTA 6 would be delayed into 2026.
In the past few weeks, some major titles started staking claims with “Marathon” setting a September 23rd launch and “Ghost of Yotei” locking in October 2nd. It was GTA publisher Take-Two setting an earlier than expected September 12th release for “Borderlands 4” the other day that had people suspecting a GTA6 release date reveal or delay was imminent.
Now it’s here, and in their short statement, Rockstar Games says:
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”
No other information was announced by Rockstar today and there’s no sign of a second trailer as yet – this delay likely pushes back the possibility of another one until much later in the year.
It’s also expected to kick-start a flurry of release announcements from rivals as multiple titles stake their claim for a Fall release.
