You’ve heard of fantasy football leagues, so how about fantasy film leagues? MoviePass, the subscription movie ticketing service, has launched Mogul – a fantasy gaming platform.
Users can compete in tournaments, head-to-head matchups and solo challenges in which they can predict box office results, per-screen averages, sentiment scores and awards.
Users will create their own league with teams and players. In this version, each user will have a studio and will select movies, actors and directors.
Built on the Sui blockchain, the product has an in-game currency but no real money will be exchanged at launch. A second phase will let users be able to pay for upgrades. Eventually, a third phase will allow users to win money.
Stacy Spikes, co-founder and CEO of MoviePass, says in a statement: “In the same way you’re playing around outcomes of games, here you’re also playing around outcomes of box office and performance.”
An international beta launch of the product is taking place today with 400,000 users having already joined the early-access waitlist. Mogul is designed to be integrated with the MoviePass app.
The company is said to be considering eventually introducing a model in which users pay an entry fee to compete or pay a fee per transaction on the app.
