Gunn: “Superman” & Corenswet Are Square

There are various attributes about Superman, but one of the most obvious is that the guy is square – he’s honest, old-fashioned, conventional, reliable, sincere, noble and anything but hip or cool.

It’s a trait the new “Superman” film director James Gunn thought was key to his take on the Man of Steel, one that moves away from Zack Snyder and Bryan Singer’s interpretations of the character towards something a bit more like Christopher Reeve used to play him as.

In a new interview with ABC, he explained why he saw David Corenswet as the right choice from very early on in the casting process.

Gunn had seen the actor playing a very different kind of character in Ti West’s film “Pearl” and was immediately struck by how different the actual Corenswet was:

“David was one of the very first auditions that I got. Instantly, it was a relief because he had a playful charm about him that was not evident in Pearl. He had a sense of humor. That made me go, ‘Ooh, this might be a really good match’.

Superman is a square and David is a square. He listens to American Songbook. Like Dean Martin and Cole Porter. That’s what he listens to on his iPad. That’s weird. But oh, so Superman.”

Gunn has also shared a new look at Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific in a behind-the-scenes photo he has shared celebrating the anniversary of the character. He says the character “has long been one of my favorite characters” which is why he plays a big part in the new film.

The film has had both a teaser trailer and extended sneak peek, but no actual trailer as yet. Gunn was asked about that and confirmed neither of the clips released that far is the ‘official trailer’ which has yet to premiere. That is expected shortly, but it’s still not clear when exactly.

“Superman” is set to open in cinemas on July 11th.
