Biscuits & Banjos brought Carolina Chocolate Drops back & more – pics & video

Rhiannon Giddens‘ inaugural Biscuits & Banjos festival took over downtown Durham, NC this past weekend, where Carolina Chocolate Drops, the band Giddens help form in 2005, reunited for their first performance in over 10 years (with Dom Flemons, Justin Robinson, Leyla McCalla, Hubby Jenkins, Súle Greg Wilson, Rowan Corbett, and Rhiannon herself). There were also performances from Yasmin Williams, Amythyst Kiah, Buffalo Nichols, Pierce Freelon, Hubby Jenkins, Joy Clark, Toshi Reagon, New Dangerfield, Shirlette Ammons, The Legendary Ingramettes (who were joined by both Toshi & Rhiannon during their Sunday set), Bittersweet Brass Band, Don Flemons, Taj Majal, Leyla McCalla, Adia Victoria, Jake Blount, Christian McBride, and more, as well as talks, film screenings, line dancing, banjo lessons, and more. We unfortunately didn’t make it for Friday, but you can see more pictures by Sachyn Mital from Saturday and Sunday below.

If you missed it, the Carolina Chocolate Drops set and more was also streamed live on Veeps where you can still grab a ticket to watch it for a few more days (then it’s gone forever!).

“Radical cultural collaboration is at the heart of American music and it was on full display at the first annual Biscuits & Banjos festival,” Giddens wrote on Instagram. “Let’s take these lessons, community, and joy that we have created this weekend, and bring it back out into the world. I’m so proud of what we have built. Thank you.”
