SAS Euro Bonus and Scandic Friends have announced a partnership whereby elite members can now match tier match between programs. Starting in June, members will be able to convert points between the two programs. The transfer ratio will be 1 EuroBonus point to 2 Scandic Friends point or 2 Scandic Friends points to 1 EuroBonus point. That could make for some great deals for those looking to stay at Scandic hotels (which you’ll find mostly in Sweden, Norway, and Finland but also in Denmark, Germany, and a couple of locations in Poland).
Tier matching live now
Tier matching is already live, with elite members of both programs able to match status. The press release only noted matching from SAS EuroBonus to Scandic Friends, but then the press release was accompanied by the following graphic which suggests that tier matching likely works in both directions.
Hopefully we will find a way to tier match to a useful level of status with Scandic Friends and then onward to SAS, although SkyTeam elite status is of limited utility.
Point transfers coming in June
The real star of the show here is that, starting in June, members of both programs will be able to convert points between SAS EuroBonus and Scandic Friends. What I particularly love is that no value is lost: members can convert 1 Euro Bonus point to 2 Scandic Friends points or 2 Scandic Friends points to 1 Euro Bonus point, so if you transfer points one way and later need to cancel a trip, you should still retain the flexibility to move points between the two programs without losing anything.
While Scandic Friends is a program that won’t be familiar for most readers, they have an award chart listing all of their hotels on this page. Award pricing seems to range from 10,000 points per night to 40,000 points per night. Considering the fact that those numbers would be halved in terms of the number of SAS EuroBonus points, that could make for some really solid deals.
Keep in mind that neither of these programs are transfer partners with any of the major transferable currencies in the United States. However, this will be of interest to those of us who completed the SAS Euro Bonus Millionaire challenge at the end of last year and find ourselves with ~1,000,000 SAS Euro Bonus points. It would be easy to imagine getting a ton of hotel value out of this partnership for those looking to visit the Nordic countries.
Keep in mind though that I’ve previously written about how it is possible to use Avios to great value for Scandic hotels through Finnair. That remains a potentially solid option, but I’m sure there will be times when this may be more desirable, particularly for those with a lot of miles.
