Takashi Miike Is Directing BAD LIEUTENANT: TOKYO for Neon and It Will Be “Unrelentingly Wild and Unique”
Takashi Miike (Audition, 13 Assassins) is directing another crime-thriller film for Neon with Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo.Leading the cast is Shun Oguri (Godzilla vs. Kong, No Longer Human) as the titular corrupt cop spiraling through a gritty underworld of vice, violence, and vendettas. Joining him are Lily James (Pam & Tommy, Yesterday) as a mysterious FBI agent and WWE star Liv Morgan (Gionna Daddio) in a dramatic role as the missing daughter of a politician whose vanishing sets off a deadly chain reaction.Written by Miike collaborator Daisuke Tengan (Audition, 13 Assassins), the film reimagines the morally decayed world first explored in Abel Ferrara’s 1992 Bad Lieutenant and later retooled by Werner Herzog in 2009. This new iteration trades New York grit for neon-drenched Tokyo, where the line between law enforcement and the criminal underworld dissolves into madness. As Neon puts it, this one is shaping up to be “unrelentingly wild and unique.”Miike said in a statement: “A team of incredibly talented actors and crew has gathered in Tokyo. Now. I’m about to throw a fastball straight down the middle of your strike zone – no tricks, no gimmicks. I’m confident we are about to break through every limit, to create unforgettable entertainment. Get ready for the ride with us.”This will be a U.S.-Japan co-production, spearheaded by Jeremy Thomas for Recorded Picture Company, Sam Pressman for Pressman Film, Naoaki Kitajima for Nippon TV, and Misako Saka for OLM. Neon will handle U.S. theatrical release and international sales.Producer Jeremy Thomas said: “We’re all delighted to reinterpret this iconic IP with a master filmmaker like Takashi Miike. We’ve produced 10 films in Japan, most recently Grand Maison Paris, which has grossed over $28M domestically, and it’s a fertile place to create and distribute films. I feel the time is right for this irreverent hybrid.”Sam Pressman of Pressman Film added: “Director Miike brings a fearless new vision to the Bad Lieutenant, a character defined by the auteur. Just as maestros Ferrara and Herzog delivered films as radically different as their own voices, Miike’s adaptation is unrelentingly wild and unique. “My father Edward R. Pressman always believed this story of corruption, both of police and the human soul, has a global resonance. To realize this next evolution now in Tokyo with Director Miike, Neon, and my father’s lifelong friend Jeremy Thomas — all true believers in the power of independent cinema — is both an honor and a dream come true.”If you're familiar with Miike’s filmography, you already know that this is going to be a wild noir thriller.Source: Deadline
