“Thunderbolts” Snags $32 Million Opening Day

Marvel Studios and Disney’s “Thunderbolts*” is headed for a $32 million domestic box-office opening day, that figure including $11.5 million in previews last night.

As such, the film remains on track for its projected $70-75 million domestic opening as was predicted earlier this week – hovering at around the same level as most post-COVID MCU film openings.

Good critical reviews are being buoyed by good audience reviews with a 95% (4.6/5) audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic, the critics and audience are in lock-step with a 68/100 and 6.8/10 respectively. Despite the upbeat word of mouth, it isn’t expected to lead to a surge in business.

“Sinners” will come in second with a $9 million on Friday ahead of what’s expected to be a $30-35 million haul over the three-day – a drop of just 23-34%.

“A Minecraft Movie” will come in third with $3 million today and $13 million for the three-day. By the end of the film’s fifth weekend, it should hover around $398 million domestically.

Fourth will be :The Accountant 2″ which is headed for a 51% drop in its second weekend with an $11.2 million haul. “Until Dawn” rounds out the top five with $3 million for its second weekend – a drop of 59%.
