Guy Ritchie Announced To Direct Road House 2

For a reboot to a non-sacred cow of an ‘80s action programmer, the Doug Liman-directed Road House was plenty of fun. Its star Jake Gyllenhaal offered a unique take on Patrick Swayze’s romanticized bar bouncer, making it one of Amazon MGM’s surprise gems of 2024. A sequel seemed inevitable and now we got word it’s moving forward with a new director.

Per Variety, Guy Ritchie (The Gentlemen, Aladdin) will take over the directing reigns from Liman for Road House 2. It will be Ritchie’s third effort with Gyllenhaal having worked together previously on The Convent and the upcoming action-thriller In the Grey. Plot details are unknown as Will Beall (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F) is penning the screenplay.

Liman’s exit from the sequel stems from Amazon’s controversial decision to bypass a theatrical release for Road House last year. The original director vented his frustration to Indiewire while promoting his movie The Instigators last summer.

“First of all, I have no issue with streaming. We need streaming movies cause, we need writers to go to work and directors to go to work and actors to go to work and not every movie should be in a movie theater. So I’m a big advocate of TV series, of streaming movies, of theatrical movies, we should have it all. My issue on ‘Road House’ is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theaters, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated. Forget about the effect on the industry — 50 million people saw ‘Road House’ — I didn’t get a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a cent, [producer] Joel Silver didn’t get a cent. That’s wrong.”

The reimagining of Road House saw Gyllenhaal’s Dalton as an ex-MMA fighter-turned-bouncer at a Florida Keys bar. He finds himself matching bare-knuckle fists with deadly bikers and gangs as he takes on a greedy developer and Conor McGregor’s crazed enforcer. Hopefully, the sequel will have a new take on Sam Elliott’s role as Dalton’s seasoned mentor.
