Gillian Anderson has hinted she may be open to returning for Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files.
In April, the Sinners director opened up about his new vision of the hit ‘90s supernatural series, which starred Anderson and David Duchovny as FBI agents investigating paranormal cases.
Speaking to The Last Podcast On The Left, the filmmaker revealed: “I’m working on X-Files. That’s what’s immediately next. So, I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary”.
Anderson appeared on an episode of UK show This Morning and recalled speaking to the director about the series. “I spoke to (Coogler), and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person, and best of luck,’” she said, adding that she told him to: “Call me.”
Asked if she would return for the reboot, she replied: “At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good and it feels like the right time, perhaps”.
The star won a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Dana Scully, the more sceptical investigator in contrast to Duchovny’s Fox Mulder, who believes firmly in the paranormal. She starred in the show for its entire run, as well as two movie adaptations and a two-season revival, which ran from 2016-18.
Since breaking through with the show, Anderson has found success with a number of other shows, such as Hannibal, Sex Education, and The Fall. She played British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Netflix drama The Crown, for which she won a second Emmy.
Despite their success, last year Anderson and Duchovny recalled drifting apart during their years on the show, with the pair confessing: “There was a lot of tension”.
