Ultraman Street in Sukagawa, Japan

Eiji Tsuburaya, the father of tokusatsu (Japanese special effects), is known around the world as the creator of Godzilla, but another franchise of his design remains just as popular in Japan. Ultraman, which began in 1966 with an Outer Limits-like anthology titled Ultra Q, is a superhero series with a kaiju twist. The premise is simple: possessed by an extraterrestrial entity, the protagonist transforms into a gigantic titular superhero to combat alien behemoths. A massive hit, the franchise continues to run on and has had American re-imaginings as well. In the city of Sukagawa, Tsuburaya’s hometown in Fukushima Prefecture, the characters from Ultraman line the street leading from the station to the city’s community center, which houses a museum dedicated to the SFX legend. The statues are so detailed and realistic, even the wrinkles of the costumes are recreated. While there are several iterations of the Ultraman character, the most impressive part is the kaiju, with its diverse rogues’ gallery adding colors to the street.
