Filmmaker James Cameron’s upcoming third “Avatar” film, “Avatar: Fire And Ash,” is expected to clock in longer than his second film “Avatar: The Way of Water” – a movie that already runs long at 192 minutes (3hrs, 12mins).
Speaking with Empire, he confirms that “Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than Movie 2”. He adds that the original plan was only for three sequels but when developing the story for the first of these, it became so much they split it into the second and third films:
“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2. The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.'”
Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver worked on the scripts for the second and third films. Cameron’s name also came up today in an interview with Michael Bay. Speaking to THR, Bay says he and Cameron recent spoke about how Hollywood has changed:
“I just had a conference call with Jim Cameron and we were both commiserating about Hollywood. No one can greenlight anything anymore. It’s just so slow. It’s a very different business.”
“Avatar: Fire And Ash” opens in cinemas in December.
