Before she became known as a kickass heroine who regularly takes on zombies and monsters, actress Milla Jovovich broke through in Luc Besson’s 1997 sci-fi classic “The Fifth Element” playing the orange-haired Leeloo.
Bruce Willis starred as Korben Dallas, a taxicab driver and former special forces major who joins forces with the mysterious Leeloo to recover four mystical stones essential for the defence of Earth against the impending attack of a malevolent cosmic entity.
The film made a very strong $263.9 million in box-office from a $90 million budget and has become a cult hit on home video in the decades since.
Now, speaking with ComicBook.com to promote her new film “In the Lost Lands” opening next month, she revealed she and Besson may be working together again soon on a potential animated spin-off:
“I think Luc is making some sort of spinoff of a bunch of his biggest characters, and Leeloo might be one of them. An animated, cartoon version. I think back in those days, people weren’t thinking about sequels, it was just about making the best movie you could possibly make. For me, Leeloo was one of the most important characters of my young life at that point. It’s what really introduced me to what being a real actor was about.”
How far Besson has gotten with the project is unclear, but an animated project is about the only way a follow-up could be done at this point. Beyond the obvious expense of doing it in live-action, much of the cast can’t return – Bruce Willis is retired from acting due to debilitating dementia, Sir Ian Holm died in 2020, and Chris Tucker only acts very, very occasionally.
Jovovich and Gary Oldman could be potentially the only returnees and the latter remains one of the most in demand actors out there.
