Modded PSP handhelds can now connect to WPA2 encrypted Wi-Fi networks, thanks to a custom firmware update. PSP’s multiplayer and online functionality have long been dead since the 20-year-old console couldn’t evolve with time, but modders are determined to keep Sony’s beloved handheld going somehow.

Modded PSP handhelds with ARK firmware are back online

As reported by Wololo.net, the development team behind ARK firmware has updated ARK4 with built-in support for WPA2 networks, eliminating the hassle of using separate plugins.

The update currently only supports 2.4 GHz band, and in case you’re struggling, this Reddit thread offers a step-by-step guide as well as a troubleshooting guide. The comments suggest that the update works great on almost all models of PSP, and players are excited to go online with ease once again.

PSP multiplayer is sorely missed by the community. I personally spent a lot of time playing Resistance: Retribution and ModNation Racers online, and crave having a PlayStation handheld like the PSP again.

Rumor has it that PS Portal‘s success has resulted in Sony toying with handhelds again, and reliable insiders have claimed that a standalone handheld will be released as part of the PS6 generation of consoles. Here’s hoping that turns out to be true.
