Nickelodeon has handed out a green light to “Avatar: Seven Havens,” a new 2D animated series spin-off of its iconic TV series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”.

The new series will consist of 26 half-hour episodes spread across two seasons, the news coming the day before the original series celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Unfolding in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm, a young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra. In this dangerous new era though, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior.

Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.

The project marks the overall third “Avatar: The Last Airbender” animated series following the original and “Avatar: The Legend of Korra” which ran for four seasons between 2012 and 2014.

The project is currently in production and hails from show creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko who executive produce under the Avatar Studios banner at Nickelodeon Animation. Ethan Spaulding also executive produces.

An animated film focused on Aang and the characters from ‘Last Airbender’ hits cinemas next January, while the live-action adaptation of the original show has already been greenlit for two more seasons – though DiMartino and Konietzko exited that due to creative differences.
