The big news for Scream 7 is that Matthew Lillard is returning to the franchise for the first time since Wes Craven’s original slasher back in the 1990s, but we still have no idea how Lillard – and his long-deceased character, Stu Macher – will be returning to the fold. As for Lillard himself, well, he’s definitely concerned about messing with the original movie’s beloved legacy.
Speaking at 90s Con over the weekend at the Connecticut Convention Center, Lillard opened up about his concerns. The below quotes from the convention come courtesy of People.
Matthew Lillard told the crowd in attendance at 90s Con, “I will say, I can’t say anything about it, obviously. But I am very excited and slightly terrified to be back because all I can do is really screw up a legacy that we have. I could really suck, and so that’s my fear.”
“My fear is that I come back and sort of punish something that I could never have touched and been just fine,” Lillard continued, with brutal honesty. “I hope I don’t f it up for everyone.”
Scream 7 will release in theaters on February 27, 2026. In addition to Lillard, David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and even Scott Foley will return for the film.
Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown are also set to return.
Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson is directing Scream 7.
