‘Leprechaun’ Update – Felipe Vargas No Longer Directing Lionsgate’s Next Installment

It had been announced back in June of 2023 that a new Leprechaun movie was in the works at Lionsgate, with Felipe Vargas (Milk Teeth) being hired to “reimagine” the franchise.

But it’s been over a year since we’ve heard a peep about the project, with Felipe Vargas’ new horror movie Rosario more recently being announced for release on May 2. What’s the status on Vargas’ Leprechaun movie, you ask? Well, Bloody Disgusting’s sources have learned that Felipe Vargas is no longer directing the new Leprechaun movie for Lionsgate.

Whoever ends up taking over as director, the next Leprechaun movie will be the ninth installment in the franchise. Mike Van Waes wrote the screenplay, with Roy Lee producing.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue looking into this developing story.

The Leprechaun franchise kicked off with Mark Jones’s original horror-comedy in 1993, which was followed by five Warwick Davis-starring sequels, a reboot, and later Leprechaun Returns in 2018. Even though Leprechaun Returns was a sequel to the original movie, Linden Porco took over the role of the title character, played by Dylan Postl for Leprechaun Origins.

Vargas had told Splattercast ahead of St. Patrick’s Day last year that he was aiming for his movie to be “scary as hell and also hilarious,” described as a “reinvention” of the franchise.

While Vargas’ Leprechaun movie may not be happening, you can watch the Milk Teeth director’s feature debut Rosario beginning May 2. Emeraude Toubia (“Shadowhunters”) confronts a curse with the help of David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) in the film.

Watch the trailer for Rosario below and expect more on Leprechaun soon.
