Filmmaker Ryan Coogler has revealed a surprising inspiration for his upcoming period horror film “Sinners” – none other than the Dreamworks Animation’s 2022 animated feature “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”.
Speaking on Straw Hat Goofy’s Movies channel, Coogler asks the hosts if he’s seen the ‘Puss’ sequel before confirming it was a “massive” influence on “Sinners”. The host asks “Puss in Boots… on Sinners?”.
Coogler responds: “Yeah, think about the villain… think about his defining features” to which the host responds: “Oh the eyes. Yes. Oh, my god bro” to which Coogler enthusiastically nods re-affirming. He then continues with: “think about his demeanor”.
He adds that his go-to board artist, Louis Gonzalez, worked at Pixar for almost 20 years and on other films like “The Iron Giant”. Gonzalez reportedly boarded around 80% of “Sinners.”
Making nearly five time its budget at the box-office after a slow start, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” received acclaim upon release as one of the best works to come out of Dreamworks Animation with a 95% (7.6/10) RT score.
A key part of that was Wagner Moura’s white wolf antagonist who is the embodiment of Death. Complete with sinister whistle, red eyes and twin sickles, the character was fierce when required and eerily calm otherwise – resulting in a villain that genuinely got under the skin.
Whether the “Sinners” villains can live up to that, we’ll have to wait and see. With 45 reviews counted, the film is sitting on an astonishing 100% (8.8/10) score on Rotten Tomatoes.
