Don’t Expect “The Last of Us Part III” Game

Those hoping for Naughty Dog to get around to doing a “The Last of Us Part III” game, you’re going to be disappointed.

Speaking to Variety for a new feature piece about the upcoming second season of the HBO series adaptations of the games, creator Neil Druckmann has shot down the possibility of a third game – not just in the near future, but possibly at all.

When the question of a third game came up, Druckmann sighed and responded: “I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

The second game does offer closure to the series, even more so than the first game, meaning the HBO series should also be able to offer a satisfying ending too.

The piece also reveals that “The Matrix” and “Bad Boys” alum Joe Pantoliano has the role of Eugene in the second season of the show, a character only mentioned in the game and the one who owns a cannabis den that Ellie and her friend Dina find.

Mazin reportedly gives him screen time as a chance to expand the story’s scope beyond the game and going into “the heart of Joel and Ellie and their relationship” says Druckmann.

Asked about how many more seasons will be required, Mazin says:

“It’s getting harder to make because every episode gets big. You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is…I’ve been feeling scared lately about like, ‘Oh, yeah, I have to start thinking about Season 3.’ I remember having this feeling when we were finishing Season 1, where I was like, ‘How the f— are we going to top this?’ Now, of course, I’m like, ‘How the f— are we going to top this?’”

Also announced as joining the cast are Noah Lamanna (“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”) as Kat, who dated Ellie between the seasons; Robert John Burke (“Gossip Girl”) as bar owner Seth; and Alanna Ubach (“Euphoria”), Ben Ahlers (“Gilded Age”) and Hettienne Park (“Hannibal”) as new characters.

Druckmann also talked about the changes made to the story, saying:

“I love the changes that we’ve made. It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be.”

The trade also reveals that the first season of the series averaged nearly 32 million viewers over the first 90 days across all HBO platforms.
