Hach, ich liebe diesen Wettbewerb einfach! Beim „Dance Your Ph.D. Contest“ erstellten Doktorant:innen Tanz-Musikvideos zu ihren Dissertationen. Nach „Kangaroo Time“ im vergangenes Jahr wurde mit „Insights Into Oral Chemesthetic Perception“ zwar ein etwas weniger griffiger Titel, aber definitiv ein standesgemäßer Nachfolger für 2025 gekürt. This multi-sensory dance video is inspired by the PhD thesis „Insights into oral chemesthetic perception: A focus on food-related behavior“ by Dr. Sulo Roukka, which explores the secrets of oral chemesthetic perception with a special focus on food-related behavior.

Chemesthesis is a chemical dimension of tactile sensation. Different chemical compounds can activate our somatosensory system, creating sensations such as the burning heat of chili (capsaicin), the icy coolness of mint (menthol), and the drying, puckering sensation known as astringency, which can be perceived from tea (tannins).

Chemesthesis plays a role not only in how we perceive and experience food but also in how we move on the dance floor. It can create unique connections between sensory experience and rhythm in dance.
