“Constantine” Sequel Is ‘Closer Than Ever’

In late 2022, it was announced that actor Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence were reteaming for a sequel to 2005’s DC Comics adaptation “Constantine” at Warner Bros. Pictures.

The original film grossed nearly $300 million and starred Reeves as the chain-smoking supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine from the “Hellblazer” comics.

Talk of the sequel had swirled around for many years, but it wasn’t until that announcement that things seemed real. Then strike-related delays and the busy schedules of those involved seemed to put a halt to things.

Out promoting the 4K UHD release of the film due out this coming Tuesday, Lawrence spoke with Collider and said the sequel is “closer than ever” to becoming a reality and despite various setbacks, a follow-up remains something the pair and producer Akiva Goldsman are all keen to do:

“I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it. We have a great idea. We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things.

I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us, you know, loving the character, loving the world, having it sort of in the back of our minds for twenty years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.”

In the original film, John Constantine attempts to help a woman (Rachel Weisz) sees him get caught up in the battle between heaven and hell. The archangel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton), and even Lucifer (Peter Stormare) all get involved. Shia LaBeouf, Djimon Hounsou and Gavin Rossdale also starred in the film.

“Constantine” comes to 4K UHD on February 18th.
