Coachella 2025 day 1: Missy Elliott, Three 6 Mafia, GloRilla, Speed mosh pit, surprise guests & more
Day one of Coachella 2025 also had Queen’s Brian May joining Benson Boone, Tyga, 2 Chainz, TG, Big Sean, Roddy Ricch, and Ella Mai joining Mustard, and more.

Coachella 2025 is underway and it’s off to a great start. Things began on a very hot, sunny 100-degree Friday (April 11), and it was under the desert sun that we saw an especially lively Go-Go’s set with surprise guest Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day (who headline day two). Simultaneous to that, Three 6 Mafia brought out Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly (and their longtime affiliate Project Pat). As the sun set, we walked past Queen‘s Brian May assisting Benson Boone on a rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and saw LISA shout out the White Lotus fans in the house (she portrayed Mook in the just-concluded third season). We regrettably missed A.G. Cook, made even more regrettable after learning that he brought out surprise guest Danny Brown. Later on, we headed inside the enclosed Sonora tent to see Speed giving Coachella a taste of the Sydney hardcore scene, with no lack of moshing and stage-diving to boot:
As soon as I walked out of the Sonora tent at the end of Speed’s set, I could already see and hear Missy Elliott putting on a main-stage set that was nothing short of epic and filled with classics–“The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” “All n My Grill,” “Hot Boyz,” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “1, 2 Step,” “Lose Control,” the list goes on. She only recently went on her first-ever headlining tour (in 2024!), and at this point she’s clearly got the live show of a seasoned pro. I then ran over to the other side of the festival to see GloRilla play banger after banger in the Sahara tent before making my way right back to the main stage for Lady Gaga’s theatrical finish. While that happened, Mustard DJ’d the Sahara tent, and no, Kendrick Lamar did not come out (but Tyga, 2 Chainz, YG, Big Sean, Roddy Ricch, and Ella Mai did).
That’s all of course just the tip of the iceberg. Coachella day one also featured The Marías, Tyla (who brought out Becky G), Marina, Kneecap (who led the crowd in a chant against former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and called for freedom for Palestine), julie, TOPS, Glixen, Miike Snow, Eyedress, Ravyn Lenae, and more. See a few video clips below.
