Bungie, the game developer that created the “Halo” and “Destiny” franchises, returns with the new team-based extraction shooter “Marathon” which has just released its first gameplay trailer.
Players star as mercenaries called Runners who have given up their human form for biosynthetic shell with unique abilities and stats. Players can form a crew of three to battle against up to 18 other players in each zone as you scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV for fortune, power, and answers to the planet’s secrets.
Players will battle for loot which then must be extracted successfully to collect. If your team dies, other players can collect what loot you’ve salvaged. Players can play the game without the need of a full squad (ie. singles, pairs), but with that it becomes more challenging.
A closed Alpha Test of the game starts April 23rd ahead of the actual release on September 23rd on PS5, Xbox Series and PC. A price hasn’t been set but a $40 one is rumored to be under consideration. Bungie has confirmed a PSN account won’t be required to play the game on Xbox or PC.
The game comes as something of a make-or-break title for Bungie and, to a lesser extent, Sony. With “Destiny 2” seemingly winding down to a slower rollout of new content, the developer is now betting its future on this reimagining of their mid-1990s franchise.
It will also mark Sony’s biggest attempt at a new live service game hit after multiple games in development were scrapped, one surprise hit with “Helldivers 2” which has now settled into solid number of regulars (about 10% of its peak since launch), and one utterly disastrous flop with “Concord”.
This game isn’t expected to be a “Concord” style flop, but it also needs to do better than ‘just alright’ in order to justify Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie – an acquisition that so far has looked like a dud.
