There was a lot of excitement for The First Descendant when it launched last July. It had an incredibly strong first month where it reached its all-time peak player count of over 264,000 players. Since its release, interest has sharply declined as its player count has decreased substantially since launch. Despite that, developer Nexon continues to support all of its platforms with new content and updates. Well, that’s true until June 19.

The First Descendant dropping PS4 support in June

In a recent developer livestream (as pointed out on ResetEra), Nexon confirms it will drop support for PS4 and Xbox One on June 19. This is just shy of its first anniversary. The reasoning behind ending support for last-gen platforms is due to the game continually increasing in scale. The developers state it has put in “a lot of effort and difficulty maintaining the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One builds.”

Unfortunately for PS4 players, this means The First Descendant will be unplayable in June, and will be delisted from the PlayStation Store. Progress does carry over between platforms, so if PS4 players end up grabbing a PS5 between now and June 19, they’ll be able to continue their progress on the current-gen platform.

The First Descendant is a free-to-play third-person looter shooter. When it launched it was met with very mixed reviews. On the review aggregate site Metacritic, it holds an average score of 57 across 21 critic reviews. On Steam, users are also “Mixed.” While it seems players enjoy the initial grind of the game, many criticize its endgame content.

Another criticism of The First Descendant involves plagiarism of developer Bungie. When the game launched, Nexon was accused of lifting art from Destiny. In response to the accusations, Nexon stated it will “ensure that the imagery that may appear similar clearly reflects the unique identity of our game.”
