THE CONJURING: LAST RITES Will Close the Book on Phase One of The Conjuring Universe, But There’s More to Come

I’m a big fan of The Conjuring franchise and the upcoming film The Conjuring: Last Rites, is being billed as the final chapter for Ed and Lorraine Warren… at least as we’ve come to know them. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are reportedly stepping away from their iconic roles, and the next movie is set to hit theaters on September 5, 2025. But here’s the thing: the Conjuring Universe isn’t ending. In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema’s Chief Creative Officer Richard Brener shed some light on what’s happening with the franchise and Last Rites will close out Phase One of the franchise. He shared: “So while this is last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more. Phase two is TBD.”So Phase Two is officially on the table. Last Rites might mark the end of the current arc with Ed an Lorraine Warren, but this universe isn’t heading into the light just yet.New Line is also feeling good about the new movie, with Brener saying: “It’s testing through the roof and we’re only at the director’s cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you’re normally very, very scared about the status of your film. We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof.”That’s a lot of confidence for a film still in early post-production, but considering this is the same universe that turned demonic dolls and haunted nuns into box office hits, it tracks. The movie is being directed by Michael Chaves, who also helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II.David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the third installment with James Wan, wrote the screenplay for the film, and Wan is producing with Peter Safran. Here’s the current Conjuring timeline:The ConjuringAnnabelleThe Conjuring 2Annabelle: CreationThe NunAnnabelle Comes HomeThe Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do ItThe Nun 2And now, The Conjuring: Last RitesThat’s eight films deep, with Last Rites set to be number nine, officially wrapping up this first era of wild and horrific supernatural storytelling.

Phase two is TBD.”

So Phase Two is officially on the table. Last Rites might mark the end of the current arc with Ed an Lorraine Warren, but this universe isn’t heading into the light just yet.

New Line is also feeling good about the new movie, with Brener saying: “It’s testing through the roof and we’re only at the director’s cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you’re normally very, very scared about the status of your film. We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof.”

That’s a lot of confidence for a film still in early post-production, but considering this is the same universe that turned demonic dolls and haunted nuns into box office hits, it tracks.

The movie is being directed by Michael Chaves, who also helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II.

David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the third installment with James Wan, wrote the screenplay for the film, and Wan is producing with Peter Safran.

Here’s the current Conjuring timeline:

  • The Conjuring

  • Annabelle

  • The Conjuring 2

  • Annabelle: Creation

  • The Nun

  • Annabelle Comes Home

  • The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

  • The Nun 2

  • And now, The Conjuring: Last Rites

That’s eight films deep, with Last Rites set to be number nine, officially wrapping up this first era of wild and horrific supernatural storytelling.
