Sony Considers An “Astro Bot” Film/Series?

While there had been many game-to-screen adaptations, 2023 was the year the artform really broke through.

In January, HBO’s “The Last of Us” series scored some of the year’s best TV series reviews and some of the cabler’s best viewership numbers to date, while Universal turned “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” into the biggest film of the year at the box-office despite mixed reviews.

This month it’s happening again. On the one hand Warners has just released the “Minecraft” film into cinemas where it’s exceeding all projections and is headed for a massive $110-130 million or so domestic debut, while HBO is readying the launch of the second season of “The Last of Us” which is expected to be one of the big TV events of the year.

Sony has embraced this wholeheartedly with their PlayStation Productions label currently in development on at least ten projects based on their properties. Not only do they have an “Until Dawn” film hitting later this month and a second season of “Twisted Metal” coming to Peacock this Summer, they also have a “God of War” TV series in the works at Amazon.

There’s also films based on “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” “Helldivers,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” “Days Gone” and another “Uncharted” all in the works. Now you can add one more to the list – last year’s Game of the Year winner “Astro Bot”.

Speaking with Variety, head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash confirms that the company is “absolutely” looking at the universally acclaimed family-friendly platformer for its potential to be added to that list of PlayStation properties getting screen adaptations. Talking about deciding which games get adapted, he says:

“For us, it’s, ‘OK, we’ve established one of our franchises as a great game. It’s starting to get a built-in audience. It’s winning awards.’ Those are very early indicators for us to want to try and grow that franchise and grow that IP. So we’re constantly looking at that. And I would say it’s not just sort of awards and nominations that drive that. Sometimes we have IP that’s just got great stories that a creator really wants to adapt it.”

The 2024 game sold 1.5 million units within its first two months, making it one of the best-selling PlayStation 5 games to date.
