‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ – First Images from Final Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga Movie

While The Conjuring: Last Rites won’t necessarily mark the end of the franchise – rather, it’s said to be the ending of the universe’s “phase one” – this year’s upcoming sequel will (allegedly) mark the final Conjuring movie to star Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. And Entertainment Weekly brings us the first images today.

Director Michael Chaves tells EW, “Even as we were developing it, we were throwing a bunch of ideas out: ‘How shamelessly big can we make it?’ ‘How epic can we make it?’ ‘Is this the culmination of all the demons coming to face them?'” But ultimately, he notes, “I felt strongly that the biggest, most emotional story we could tell was the most personal story.”

Patrick Wilson teases in the same interview with Entertainment Weekly, “The third film was kind of a detour. It was more a murder mystery, really like a true crime. This really felt like a proper ending to get back to the heart of the franchise, the family of it all.”

The outlet reveals that The Conjuring: Last Rites is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens are retired at the beginning of the movie, but a new case pulls them back into one final nightmare… as always, together.

The case? The famous Smurl family haunting, which “refers to claims made by Jack and Janet Smurl of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, who alleged that a demon inhabited their home between 1974 and 1989.” You can learn more about the Smurl haunting over on Wikipedia.

Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, Tilly Walker, Molly Cartwright, Peter Wight, and Kate Fahy will also star in the new installment.

The Conjuring: Last Rites will release in theaters September 5, 2025.

There are currently eight films in The Conjuring universe — The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Nun 2. That makes The Conjuring: Last Rites the ninth installment, wrapping up “Phase One” and setting the stage for “Phase Two” down the road.

The Conjuring films are based on the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively.
