Shun Oguri (“Godzilla v. Kong”), Lily James (“Yesterday”) and WWE star Liv Morgan are all set to star in famed filmmaker Takashi Miike’s new feature “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” at NEON.
Production on the U.S.-Japan co-production kicks off this month with Neon to release the film theatrically in North America and represent the international sales rights in Cannes later this month.
Written by Miike’s “Audition” and “13 Assassins” collaborator Daisuke Tengan, the Bad Lieutenant (Oguri) of this tale is a corrupt gambler in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Force.
He finds himself thrown into a tangled case after an enigmatic FBI agent (James) arrives in the city to investigate the disappearance of a politician’s daughter (Morgan).
Meanwhile, a deviant killer operating in the yakuza underworld seems to be shadowing their moves. Miike says in a statement:
“A team of incredibly talented actors and crew has gathered in Tokyo. Now. I’m about to throw a fastball straight down the middle of your strike zone – no tricks, no gimmicks. I’m confident we are about to break through every limit, to create unforgettable entertainment. Get ready for the ride with us.”
Jeremy Thomas, Sam Pressman, Naoaki Kitajima and Misako Saka produce. This will mark the third “Bad Lieutenant” feature following the Harvey Keitel-led original directed by Abel Ferrara in 1992, and the Nic Cage-led “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” in 2009 directed by Werner Herzog.
The films are linked thematically – each featuring a corrupt policeman as the central character – along with being auteur-driven and produced by Pressman Film. Sam Pressman says the new film is “unrelentingly wild and unique”.
Earlier this week it was reported that Charlie XCX is set to star in and produce the next film from Miike, but that is an unannounced separate project being penned by Ross Evans and Yumiko Aoyagi.
