In a recent interview screenwriter Steven Knight comments on his time writing the Star Wars Rey Sequel movie, which is now in other hands. The process at work here is not atypical of how Hollywood produces scripts. The hands of many writers can be seen on the majority of Hollywood films over the years. The process for this movie was just a bit more public, given the interest in the Star Wars franchise.

The process began with a pitch and a first draft of story by Damon Lindelof and his writing partners. Lucasfilm liked enough of that pitch to greenlight the film’s continued development and hire a director. This much we know as true.

However, if rumors are true, Lucasfilm wanted Daisy Ridley in the role, not a recast much older Rey. Lindelof and co moved away and Knight was brought in. Not for a page one rewrite, but to take that original pitch and see what he could do with it. Knight himself has now passed on his drafts to Lucasfilm and the process continues. Lucasfilm still don’t feel the script is ready, therefore George Nolfi is taking a shot.

Here’s what Knight had to say when he spoke to The Telegraph,

‘Meanwhile, when we met, Knight was also working on a new Star Wars film, but it has since emerged that he is no longer involved in the project. “There’s a system, and when you engage with it, you know what it is. You do your bit, you turn in your draft or drafts, as I did, and then the system moves on,” he tells me later. “I fully expect that substantial amounts of what I did will be in the movie – who knows? But that’s the expectation.” Relations with Disney, which owns Star Wars, are clearly unaffected, as A Thousand Blows has already been renewed for a second series.’

I’d imagine Lindelof and his co-writers will get a story credit, given their basic idea is still the foundation. So will Knight, if any of his ideas were used, which is the likely scenario. Still, filming won’t happen until Lucasfilm has a script they like, so it’s up to George Nolfi, for now.
