In a recent interview Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier likens the character group dynamics to the situation presented in Toy Story 3. Perhaps an unusual analogy to make but he does explain himself. Speaking with Empire as part of their coverage of the film this month here’s what Schreier had to say.

“I had Toy Story 3 in there,” Schreier tells Empire in the world-exclusive Thunderbolts* issue. “It wasn’t as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters. They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together.” And the characters of Thunderbolts*, like those in Toy Story 3, are facing obsolescence. “That [furnace] sequence works so well because you’ve come to care about these characters so much,” says Schreier of the Pixar threequel. “Can they get out of the trash can together?”

“You’re talking about a group of characters that have done a lot of bad things, and maybe are struggling with feeling good about themselves,” Schreier explains. “There’s an element that does speak to mental health, and loneliness, and how some of the darkness that we experience in our lives can’t be necessarily fixed, but can only really be made lighter through connection and finding others.”

Empire unpublished a separate part of the same interview online. In this one star Florence Pugh likens the movies to a superhero themed A24 film.

“It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes,” Florence Pugh laughs to Empire, reprising her role as Widow-trained assassin Yelena Belova, previously seen in Black Widow and Hawkeye. Schreier has form in that arena, given Beef was an actual A24 production. “There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different,” he notes. “There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”

Pugh also briefly mentioned ‘Bob’ and how he works within the team.

“Bob is going through what all of them are probably, secretly, going through,” Pugh teases. “Yelena sees parts of herself in him. She’s always been someone that wants to look after people. She has a sweet spot for him, and essentially likes looking after him because he’s useless. He’s absolutely useless.”

So, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier likens the group dynamics to Toy Story 3. What do you think of his, or Pugh’s comments about Thunderbolts*? Thoughts below.
