Following Donald Trump’s installation of loyalists on the Kennedy Center board to elect him chairman, the president is now floating himself as the next host of the Kennedy Center Honors. Stephen Colbert is more than happy to see that happen — provided it comes with a trade.
Really, during his monologue on Monday night, the CBS host wasn’t at all surprised to hear Trump suggest his own name as host.
“You could have given me a thousand guesses, and that would have been all of them,” Colbert said with a laugh. “I just want to point out I hosted the Kennedy Center Honors. I did it for three years! Yeah, went down there every year. Did it for three years, it was a lot of fun. And I’ll tell you what, sir, I’m willing to trade.”
“You host the Kennedy Center Honors, I’ll be president,” he finished, earning huge applause from the audience.
The crowd even launched into a chant of Colbert’s name, which he promptly waved off, joking that “you can’t afford me.”
Of course, Colbert also side-eyed Trump’s supposed lack of actual desire to host the show. In audio obtained by the New York Times, Trump insisted no less than three times “I don’t want to do it,” but would agree to do it.
“Really? Because it sure sounds like you want to do it.” Colbert said skeptically. “You’re like a guy who brought his guitar to the bonfire. ‘Oh! Oh, oh this? I mean, I mean, I don’t, I don’t want to play it. But I mean, if you insist. Does anyone — What’s that? Did no one say ‘Blackbird?'”
At that, Colbert began pretending to play the song terribly, miming guitar while one of his house band members actually played the song terribly.
