Catherine O’Hara Reveals She Took ‘Way Less Money’ on ‘Home Alone 2’ for One Simple Reason | Video

The “Home Alone” franchise would be nothing without Catherine O’Hara’s legendary “KEVIN!” screams, but according to the actress, she got “way less money” for the sequel. Don’t worry though, it was voluntary.

Appearing on the latest episode of TheWrap’s “UnWrapped” podcast in support of her new Apple TV+ series “The Studio” (the first two episodes of which are now streaming), the actress explained that, though she plays a studio head-turned-producer on the series, she has never dealt too much with real-life studio heads.

“My main contact with studio heads is when you’re negotiating at the beginning, and try to get a good deal, and try to get a good schedule, and — you know, condense my work,” she explained. “Just condense. I’ll take less money. Condense it, please. I hate hanging around and not working.”

And apparently, she walked that walk on “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” According to O’Hara, she “took way less money” on the sequel in order to secure a shorter shooting schedule.

“In the first movie, I was there for a long time … and it was pre-cell phones, right? So I’d be at a mall or something, and I have to find a pay phone, and I’d call the First AD,” she recalled. “I said, ‘Do you need me?’ And if they were outdoors and they couldn’t get the shot, and they need to move inside for another scene, then they go, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna pick you up. Where are you? We’re gonna pick you up. We need you.'”

O’Hara noted that she was “hanging around a lot waiting” for her instructions, and though she loved Chicago (where the film was shot and took place), she definitely did not want to do that again on the next one.

“So the second one, they offered, you know, a nice chunk of money for a 3-month kind of commitment. I said ‘ehh,'” she explained, miming a request to shorten it. “And they condensed it for me!”

O’Hara could not recall exactly how long her final shooting schedule ended up being, but guessed about a month as opposed to three.

“I just don’t like hanging around and doing nothing,” she said.
