Rashida Jones reflected on her time on the US version of The Office, saying that she felt fans of the show didn’t like her character.
Jones played Karen Filippelli, a character first introduced in season three. An employee at Dunder Mifflin’s Stamford branch, she became became a love interest to Jim (John Krasinski) and a rival to Pam (Jenna Fischer). Given the fan investment in the blossoming relationship between Jim and Pam, this new introduction was not well-received.
The character was cut early on into season four and made a brief re-appearance in season five. Speaking to Amy Poehler on her podcast Good Hang, Jones looked back on her time on the popular sitcom.
“I had done a year on The Office and they let me go, which made sense. It made sense” she said. Poehler commented on the situation, saying: “You had such a tough job there, because everybody wanted Jim and Pam, and then guess who shows up? A very likable, cool… and everyone was like, ‘Oh no, wait’”.
Commenting on Poehler’s “likeable” remark, Jones replied: “It did not feel that way. People did not like me. Like, fans were not about it,” before adding: “I was the third point in the triangle. It’s fine. I accept it”.
The actor would go on to find success elsewhere, working opposite Poehler in Parks and Recreation from 2009 to 2015. She would also take the title role in comedy series Angie Tribeca, and direct a Netflix documentary about her father, producer Quincy Jones.
The Office remains a favourite thanks to TV reruns and streaming audiences, with a spin-off announced last year.
The new show is rumoured to be called The Paper, and take place in a dying Midwestern historic newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. The series will star Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore in the leads, and be set in the same universe as its predecessor.
