Virgin Atlantic is opening a new Clubhouse lounge for its Upper Class passengers and frequent flyers at Los Angeles LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal, and it’s a doozy. Mixing LA and the UK, the new Clubhouse is a moodlit, intimate space that’s an absolute masterclass in lounge design, aesthetics — and functionality.
In true LA fashion, who better to welcome you into this veritable castle of a lounge than Alan Cumming, fresh from a double Emmy win for The Traitors, and resplendent in a velvety red corduroy suit, introducing the lounge, and indeed the Upper Class onboard passenger experience inside the airline’s Airbus A330neo.
Passengers will be welcomed at the very snazzy moodlit desk area with its glittering metallic red chain curtain behind.
The entrance leads straight into the bar area, with its gold wall and what look like the only comfortable high-top chairs ever seen in an airline lounge.
Not only that, but eagle-eyed readers will have spotted a plethora of plugs per person, with three entire US-style AC outlets, a USB-A and USB-C socket, and what looks to be an HDMI outlet — at every seat. Battery anxiety, begone.
Pleasingly, the bar offers both a signature LA cocktail, the Twisted Angel featuring Aperol and gin, and low- and no-alcohol choices including TRIP’s Mindful Blend.
Virgin’s menu is half British (we can spy fish and chips) and half very Californian, including, says the airline, “signature dishes and wholesome options that cater to all dietary needs, including a tuna poke bowl, California roll, tofu pho, Californian fig salad and much more. Convenient and health-conscious bites like Mediterranean quinoa salad, raw vegetables and hummus, citrus kale salad, and trail mix are also available”.
Deeper in is the Ruby Room, with its deep red velvety chairs, matching pouffes and side tables, plus leather banquettes and atmospheric lighting choices — plus, naturally, a merch wall with Virgin bags and t-shirts. This also features a large cinema-style screen, to which passengers can connect via wireless headsets, an excellent use of the technology that the airline has been offering in the lounge areas on board its newer aircraft since 2019.
There’s also the Royal Box, a four-seater space that is, Virgin says, “a destination for VIPs featuring adjustable mood lighting and a secret menu”.
For anyone who needs to get some work done — or just take a call without blaring it across the lounge, hint hint — the best option is The Wing (Cathay Pacific, call your lawyers) with its acoustically-sealed work pods, each named for an iconic recoding studio (Olympic Studios, The Manor, Sunset Sound…)
The Zen Den relaxation area, meanwhile includes “an award-winning smart fitness mirror”, a truly wince-worthy phrase that couldn’t epitomise the conjunction of the wellness and smart tech phrases more if it tried, but apparently the mirror offers “a unique way to wind down, refresh, refocus or reenergise before crossing the Atlantic in style”, with “a selection of guided sessions from FORME’s extensive library”.
“The experience begins with a personalised welcome video from Virgin Atlantic founder, Sir Richard Branson, setting the stage for a curated experience,” says the airline.
All in all, the space looks and feels incredible — Virgin has done a stellar job designing what appears to be an entirely interior, windowless space to feel like a swanky club or an inside space aboard a Virgin Voyages cruise ship. Indeed, your author spots more than one inspired-by design element making its way from the floating lady ships into the Clubhouse.
